CLT-DOUGLAS — American Airlines announced Monday that it will preserve the operational model of Spirit Airlines by installing physical coin slots on all restroom doors at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT).
The decision follows the permanent grounding of the Spirit fleet 48 hours ago.
“Spirit was a pioneer in the art of the honest shakedown,” said American Airlines spokesperson Brad Sterling. “By adding a 25-cent ‘Fluid Management Fee’ to our lavatories, we are ensuring that the spirit of Spirit lives on, even if their low prices didn’t.”
While Spirit was frequently mocked for its no-frills approach, Charlotte travelers are now facing a market with significantly less price competition.
“It’s a more sophisticated kind of penny-pinching,” noted one aviation analyst. “Spirit nickeled-and-dimed you to your face. American nickels-and-dimes you behind your back, calls it prestige service, and then charges you for the cup anyway.”
At CLT, the mood among travelers is one of weary resignation.
“I spent five years making memes about Spirit’s cramped seats,” said one local. “But standing here looking at a coin slot on a bathroom door in an American Airlines hub, I’ve realized the truth: Spirit was the only thing keeping these guys from charging us for the air we breathe. I’d take the yellow school bus back in a heartbeat.”
The coin slots, which feature a horizontal entry and a sign reading “INSERT COINS TO UNLOCK. AMOUNT REQUIRED: 25¢,” are expected to be operational across the fleet by June.
American also confirmed it is exploring a legacy tribute to Spirit’s boarding process by charging a $50 fee to use the overhead bin, even when empty.
“We want to make sure the transition is seamless,” Sterling added. “We want our customers to board an American flight and feel that familiar, Spirit-induced anxiety, just at a much higher price point.”
