NoDa — A NoDa trivia host was mercilessly berated Wednesday night after reading off the correct answers at the end of the final round.
“It all happened so fast,” said a visibly shaken host, Trent B. “I was calmly going over the answers, announced that the Best Picture of 2005 was Million Dollar Baby, and before I could explain anything, they were already in my face yelling that it was actually Shrek 2.”
The losing team, Let’s Get Quizzical, was made up of former UNCW film-school graduates dressed in attire from Thrift Pony and one man wearing a fedora.
Witnesses said the team audibly groaned when the answers were read so that everyone could hear, and then proceeded to project their spectacular wrongness onto the night’s sacrificial lamb: the host.
“We lost by one point over some bullshit,” one member said. “This is serious—we’re gonna make him regret it.” Another reportedly justified their outrage by saying, “My cousin’s brother told me maybe one time that Shrek 2 actually won the fan vote or something.”
A third launched into a full-blown diatribe against Trent personally—calling him “a smug little tyrant,” “the self-appointed god of trivia,” and “a liar, a scoundrel, and probably homophobic.” The man paced and pointed, declaring, “We’re never coming back to this sham of a trivia. We’ll go to South End if we have to.” He then added, “We’ll see him in the parking lot.” Teammates nodded solemnly, as if planning a full-on ambush later that night.
“I just do this for fun and for a few bucks,” Trent said.
The group will be back next week.
