UPTOWN — The city of Charlotte has announced a new initiative to install free bulletproof vest kiosks throughout Uptown. “We’re proud to be on the cutting edge of crisis normalization,” said one council member. “No one should have to feel unprotected while walking to get overpriced sushi.”
The move comes as residents report feeling increasingly unsafe in parts of Uptown, with city leaders opting for “innovative harm reduction” over more expensive, harder-to-measure solutions like crime prevention or affordable housing.
Officials emphasized that the kiosks would be “a visible show of action,” adding that while they won’t solve root issues, they “do look proactive in photos.”
