CMS Cancels School For Remainder Of Year

UPTOWN – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools announced Monday morning that all classes are cancelled for the remainder of the 2025–2026 academic year due to the lingering threat of winter weather.

The decision, released via an automated phone call at 5:30 a.m., cited “ongoing uncertainties regarding asphalt temperature” and a “non-zero probability of future moisture” as the primary drivers for the closure.

“After consulting with emergency management, the district has determined that reopening before June presents an unacceptable logistical risk,” the statement read. “Until the sun’s angle changes significantly in late April, we cannot guarantee that a bus will not encounter a damp patch of pavement in Mint Hill.”

Superintendent Dr. Crystal Hill noted that the choice to scrap the spring semester was weighed carefully against academic standards.

“The decision to forfeit the remaining five months of the curriculum was difficult, but was made easier by the fact that no one attends classes anyway,” Dr. Hill told reporters. “We are simply formalizing the attendance trends we see every Friday.”

The district confirmed that missed days will not be made up, as the calendar does not support adding 85 days to the end of June.

“We are simply calling this year a draw,” the statement concluded. “We will try again in the fall, unless it rains, in which case see you in 2027.”
